LONDON-BASED RAPPER CHOZE DROPS VISUALS FOR EXPERIMENTAL GRIME BANGER “BADDERZ”
“The following story contains strong language that listeners may find compelling.”
For London-based rapper CHOZE, that’s a promise. His incendiary new single “Badderz”, the forerunner for his upcoming debut album D.I.Y, is a weapons-grade cocktail of sharp lyricism and experimental production.
The track is a soundscape that has the lifeblood of the London sound pumping through it. “It’s my introduction to the modern-day world,” CHOZE explains. “We’re living in a new era where sound and innovation has taken a whole new approach. I wanted to show that I’m walking into a new time, embracing the art of this generation.”
CHOZE paints a raw landscape of the streets that raised him, about cutting a path for yourself through the concrete and high-rises. But more than a statement of intent, it’s an even bolder statement about himself, his journey and his identity as an artist. “I want to reach the masses around the world,” he says.
“I wanted to display who I am; where I’m from. It’s important that my listeners hear my story.”
This ever-shifting track keeps you guessing, blindsiding you with sudden jolts in style. For that, we owe it to SKOLZ: his fearlessness in the face of radical production choices. The beat is arresting from the offset, with RnB inflections that cement “Badderz” as a solid anthem, as well as something more meaningful. Most interestingly of all is how dauntless CHOZE and SKOLZ are with weaving in a bland AI voice at intervals among the chaos, injecting the track with humour and flavour.
The visuals are set in a neon-bathed cityscape – almost a kind of cyberpunk dystopia. With Theresa May’s image projected onto skyscrapers, it’s not a warning, but a warped reflection of the world we’re living in. With a frame of Goya’s “Saturn Devouring His Son” hung on the wall interrupting scenes of late-night partying, it marks CHOZE as an artist who can bring you an anthem layered with meaning.
“Badderz” has got everything you want in a hip-hop banger brimming with nowness - but best of all, it’s got nerve.
